Crowns and Bridges Q&A

What are crowns and bridges?

Crowns and bridges are tooth restorations that repair damaged teeth that are:

  • Decayed
  • Weak
  • Worn down
  • Cracked
  • Chipped
  • Misshapen
  • Discolored

Crowns are caps for your teeth made of porcelain or porcelain fused to metal that cover original teeth, protect them, and restore their natural appearance. Crowns hold bridges in place, cover root canals, and perfect dental implants in the case of missing teeth.

Bridges consist of one or more porcelain false teeth and two or more crowns on either side to permanently fill in the gap of missing teeth. Bridges are an alternative option if you aren’t a candidate for dental implants.

What are the benefits of crowns and bridges?

Choosing crowns or bridges at Championship Dental offers numerous benefits. Examples include:

  • Tooth restoration
  • Elimination of gaps from missing teeth
  • Stronger teeth
  • Protection from future tooth damage
  • Improvements in the shape and size of your teeth
  • Better facial symmetry
  • Less teeth shifting into adjacent gaps
  • Improvements in your bite
  • Better chewing ability
  • Clearer speech

Crowns and bridges not only improve the way your teeth look, they allow them to function better and can give you a boost of confidence.

What happens during treatment?

Prior to crown and bridge placement, the team of dental professionals at Championship Dental review your medical and dental history, clean your teeth, complete a thorough dental examination, and take X-rays. They let you know which treatment is right for you:

Crowns

During the first visit, your dentist prepares your tooth for crown placement. They clean the tooth and complete a root canal if necessary to eliminate tooth decay. Your dentist files down the tooth along the sides and top to make room for a crown and takes impressions of your teeth, so a dental lab can create a new custom crown.

They may use a temporary crown until the permanent one is ready. During your second appointment, your dentist cements the new crown to your original tooth where it remains permanently.

Bridges

As with crowns, bridge placement usually involves two separate steps. During the first appointment, your dentist prepares the teeth adjacent to a missing tooth by filing the teeth to make room for your new bridge. They take impressions or use digital scans so that a dental lab can create a new custom bridge and might give you a temporary bridge to wear in the meantime.

When the bridge is ready, your dentist cements it to the teeth adjacent to a gap, where your new bridge remains permanently.
